Ailments List

Pyrexia or Fever is the temporary heightened body temperature above the normal of 37 °C or 98.6 °F indicating an infection. Fever is the body’s response to fight off an infection or disease and is an immune mechanism to nullify the viral and bacterial infections.

Fever in itself is a symptom of infection. When a person is ill due to a viral or bacterial infection, the resultant symptom can be a fever. Fever is part of the body’s defence mechanism to fight infections. There is a rapid increase in the number of white blood cells to attack the germs and this makes the body temperature rise causing fever in a person. Sometimes a heat stroke can cause fever in a person. Other conditions that cause fever include skin inflammations, inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic disorders and drug fever (an adverse reaction to certain drugs). A weakened immune system can also make the person more susceptible to getting a fever.

The common symptoms include a rise in the body temperature, profuse sweating, faster pulse, slight body shivers, headache and body pains. In the case of very high fever, the body’s nervous system may get damaged and some people may have a seizure. A person may show signs of dehydration during a fever. Some could have the symptoms of vomiting or diarrhoea. Breathing difficulties, unusual rashes, stiff neck, cough, sore throat, lethargic feeling and general irritability may also be considered as other symptoms of fever.

The signs and the symptoms will be carefully noted by the doctor after doing a physical examination of the patient. The doctor can also prescribe certain tests that may be necessary to evaluate the condition of the patient and make a correct diagnosis.

Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
