Ailments List

Difficulty in digestion, indigestion or dyspepsia is a condition when there is chronic abdominal pain, fullness after a light meal and increased bloating of the stomach with belching, nausea and heartburn. It may be due to peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal problems and may be a symptom of cancer. Constant and long term indigestion needs medical attention.

Overeating, eating under emotional stress or gulping down food without chewing properly may cause indigestion in a person. For many people with this condition, they may find that some kinds of foods, like fatty and greasy food do not agree with them. Some kinds of medicines could irritate the stomach causing indigestion. Consumption of too much alcohol and spicy foods also may be probable causes. Indigestion in a person could begin as a result of other conditions of liver and gall bladder too.

The symptoms of indigestion can be painful and burning sensations in the upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting, excessive belching and heartburn. A person may also experience a feeling of fullness or discomfort in the abdomen and suffer with cramps. Flatulence, constipation and diarrhoea might be a few other symptoms of indigestion.

The doctor will take a detailed medical history of the patient and study the symptoms in particular to confirm his diagnosis. The doctor may also prescribe some tests or procedures to evaluate the condition of the patient, such as a barium x-ray, endoscopy or PH monitor examination in order to provide a conclusive diagnosis.

It is recommended that the patient should change their dietary habits after consulting a nutritionist, as this can greatly affect the severity of the symptoms. Aromatherapy may also prove favourable to alleviate the symptoms of indigestion in the person. A therapeutic technique called NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming could be used to alter limiting beliefs around food which may be contributing to the symptoms, and help calm the sufferer if the condition is exacerbated as a result of stress.
