Ailments List

Pneumonia is a respiratory disease categorised by severe inflammation in the lungs. The tiny air sacs within the lungs, the alveoli, fill up with fluid which compromises their ability to absorb oxygen. This gives rise to shortness of breath, cough, chest pain and difficulty in breathing. It can be caused by parasites, fungi, bacteria and viral infections.

The most common way a person can catch pneumonia is when he/she breathes in infected air droplets from someone who already has pneumonia. Malnutrition, excessive consumption of alcohol, toxins in the body, certain medications, heart or lung disorders and systemic illness can weaken the immune system making the person more susceptible to pneumonia. The most common causes are viral and bacterial infections. Some forms of fungi may also cause this ailment. Advancing age (65 years and above), diabetes, swallowing problems, immune deficiency diseases, smoking, stroke or seizure, exposure to certain chemicals or pollutants and surgery or traumatic injury can be other risk factors that may make a person more vulnerable for contracting pneumonia.

The initial symptoms of pneumonia are cold, sneezing, cough and sore throat.  As the condition gets worse, dry cough with mucus, shaking chills, shortness of breath, sweating and fever may follow. Other indications like muscle pain, fatigue, headache and chest pain that varies with breathing may be other signs. A quick pulse rate, rapid breathing, nausea, vomiting, coughing up blood, diarrhoea, convulsions, drowsiness and rash might be the later symptoms of pneumonia.  Familiar symptoms of loss of appetite, feeling ill, mental confusion, tiredness, joint stress, abdominal pain, anxiety and tension may also occur in persons with pneumonia.

The doctor will firstly do a complete physical exam of the patient and find out the detailed medical history together with the signs and symptoms as mentioned by the patient. Different kinds of tests including imaging tests may be suggested by the doctor that the patient has to undergo to enable the doctor to accurately evaluate the condition of the patient.

The doctors generally prescribe antibiotics to treat pneumonia. Antiviral and antifungal medications can also be given to treat this ailment.

Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
