Ailments List

Sinusitis or Rhinosinusitis is the inflammation or infection in the sinus and nasal passage. It appears after upper respiratory tract infections and may also be a result of fungal, bacterial, viral, autoimmune reactions and allergies. Most common symptoms include pain or pressure in the sinus cavity, pain between or behind eyes and headaches.

When there is an excess of mucus or a sinus opening is blocked, the germs multiply and sinusitis is caused. This may occur due to colds, side effect of certain medication, allergies, nose or sinus inflammation, deviated septum and nasal polyps. If there is significant damage to the lining of the sinuses caused by surgery or infections, it may lead to sinusitis. Factors like allergic rhinitis, altitudinal changes, smoking, alcohol consumption, swimming or diving, air pollution, damp weather and a weakened immune system might make a person more susceptible to developing sinusitis. In a few cases, sinusitis may be caused by lung disorders, hormonal imbalances and stress.

Typical symptoms of sinusitis can include sneezing, cough, bad breath, general malaise, fever, headache, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, sore throat and facial pain. There is a possibility of loss of smell and the person could have a stuffy nose and swollen eyelids. Earache, neck pain, post nasal drip, watery eyes, disturbed sleep and eye pain are other probable symptoms.

The doctor will assess the medical history of the patient and note the symptoms after doing a physical examination of the patient. The doctors may recommend certain tests or procedures that may have to be done to accurately diagnose the condition. Allergy testing can also be suggested as it may help to identify the allergens that could be the basis for allergic reaction cases.

Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
