Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are visible and raised over the surface of the skin. These enlarged and swollen veins are dark blue or purple, which bulge and twist on the inside of the legs or back of the calves. It is caused if there is a defect in the valves of the blood veins stopping the blood to flow back to the heart, which in turn creates pools of blood inside the veins leading to swelling.

The main cause of varicose veins is because of sluggish blood circulation that may be due to a sedentary lifestyle, constipation, obesity, a poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, advancing age or leg injury. The defective or damaged valves within the veins are responsible for this condition. Some may have inherited problems of too few valves or abnormalities of the veins that leads to the development of varicose veins. Factors that might aggravate this condition are standing for long periods of time, wearing tight clothes, blood clots, crossing the legs while sitting or during pregnancy.

The most common symptoms of varicose veins are aching or discomfort in the legs. A person suffering with this condition may experience a burning sensation or itching of the legs. The ankles may be swollen and muscle cramps could occur. The skin shows a purplish pigmentation where the veins bulge and twist. The legs may feel heavy and itchy. The veins protrude under the skin and feel ropey to the touch. The area seems tender and there may be redness and swelling too. In some cases, skin ulcers may also form near the ankles.

It is easy for the doctor to identify and diagnose a case of varicose veins on physical examination of the person. The doctor will take a thorough medical history and note down the symptoms of the patient and may suggest simple tests to identify the problem points of the blood flow.

Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
