Ailments List

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a psychological disorder mostly found in children, below the age of 7 years. This is a developmental disorder characterised by poor concentration levels combined with hyperactivity that interferes with the mental and cognitive growth of the child.

Research suggests that ADHD occurs due to a combination of factors in addition to genetics. Brain injuries, nutrition, social and environmental factors may be the cause of ADHD. Other non genetic factors may be premature birth, alcohol, drug or tobacco use by the mother during pregnancy and a high exposure to lead that could account for ADHD. Several studies show that it runs in the family. There may be a link between ADHD being caused in relation to the additives used in food.

There are many symptoms of ADHD. Children may show signs of being easily distracted, forget things, switch from one activity to another without completing what they started and often misplace things. They may show signs of daydreaming, not paying attention to what is being said, not listening or focusing on a certain thing or being hyperactive and impulsive.  They may experience trouble in following instructions. Children with ADHD exhibit symptoms such as being in constant motion, talking nonstop and fidgeting in their seats. They can also become very impatient with all kinds of activities.

A health professional will gather all the information of the child’s behaviour patterns and talk to the family. The family may consider talking to the doctor who may assess the child for ADHD. A referral may also be made to a mental health specialist to assess the mental health of the child like undetected seizures, ear infections, vision problems, learning disabilities, anxiety or depression. A child may be assessed as to how he or she is reacting to certain social and environmental situations before making a diagnosis. A careful note of the symptoms is made by the doctor and a medical examination is also done for an accurate evaluation of the condition.

Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
