Back Pain

Back pain is felt in the back, it can start in the spine, nerves, bone, joints or the muscles. It may be a mild nagging pain, chronic or sudden and unbearable. The pain may radiate to the upper torso, lower back and sometimes extend to the legs. Other symptoms can be numbness, weakness and tingling may accompany the pain.

Back pain may have some obvious causes like from an injury or fall. Back pains may come on gradually so it may not be easy to find a precise cause. Sometimes back pain can be caused because of a poor posture. Nervous tension may also be responsible in certain cases. Serious underlying medical conditions may be the cause of back pain in some cases. Arthritis of the lower back or pregnancy can be other causes.

A dull or sharp persistent pain can occur around the spine, or anywhere in the back region. Pain may also be changeable or shooting and travel down from the back to the leg.

As there could be several sources of pain, specifics cannot easily be named in a diagnosis.  The doctor may prescribe tests or scans to show any obvious damage to the spine and the results will help the doctor to make a correct diagnosis.

The aim is to achieve maximum reduction in pain intensity as rapidly as possible.  Studies have shown that acupuncture can be beneficial in treating back pain. Acupressure or pressure point massage may also be beneficial in providing relief from back pain. Exercise may also be considered as an effective approach to reduce pain. Tui Na, a component of traditional Chinese medicine may be effective in diminishing the symptoms of back pain. As a complementary form of medicine, a person suffering with back pain might also consider osteopathy or chiropractic treatment.
