Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Is a disease of the wrist nerve causing tingling, numbness, weakness and pain in the thumb, index finger and middle fingers.  A major nerve originating in the arm goes through the carpel tunnel in the wrist. People suffering from Carpal Tunnel syndrome have heightened pressure in the carpal tunnel which leads to pressure on the nerve leading to pain and discomfort.

Conditions that result in undue pressure on the wrist nerve cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Repetitive or static flexion of the wrist and the fingers can cause inflammation leading to this disorder.  People who are at a maximum risk of developing this repetitive strain injury are computer operators, construction workers and assembly line workers among others. Further causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include gout, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, wrist fracture or direct trauma. In some people, pregnancy, obesity, hypothyroidism, metabolic disorders, work stress, mechanical problems of the wrist joint and a few kinds of nerve diseases may cause this disorder.  A person could also be congenitally predisposed to this condition if the person has a very small carpal tunnel.

People experience tightness, stiffness, swelling and discomfort when affected with this condition. There may be tingling, numbness or burning pain in the fingers and the arm. Weakness of the hand, dropping of objects and a reduced grip are other symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

The doctor will review the signs and the symptoms as enumerated by the patient and do a physical examination of the condition.  The doctor may suggest that the person undergo a few tests to study the extent of damage, make a careful evaluation and confirm a diagnosis.

Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
