Cold & Flu

Both cold and flu are viral infections of the respiratory system and the body can never build up resistance against all the variants of the flu virus. Cold is a milder form of flu but share similar symptoms of headache, body ache, sore throat, muscle aches, cough and fatigue. A high fever accompanies flu which is generally lacking in a cold infection.

Viruses cause the common cold and flu.  People are more prone to cold in the winter months.  Both cold and flu are contagious and the virus can be transmitted through physical contact with an infected person. Weakened immunity leads to an easy spread of infection from person to person.  The virus can spread with hand-to-hand contact or from objects already touched by a person having a cold.  The virus can be typically transmitted when a person touches hard surfaces (like a computer keyboard, door knobs, etc.) already handled by an infected person.

A person with a cold & flu can generally experience body weakness and an ache or pain in the muscles and joints. Headache, cough, red watery eyes, flushed skin and sore throat are other common symptoms.  A runny nose, sneezing or a sinus blockage may be other familiar symptoms of a cold.  A high fever generally accompanies flu.  Severe symptoms of the flu virus may be extreme fatigue, chills, profuse sweating, breathing trouble, nausea, vomiting and a loss of appetite.

The doctor will note the symptoms of the patient and do a basic physical examination of the patient. Sometimes the doctor may prescribe tests to detect the virus that is responsible for the symptoms.

It is important to drink plenty of fluids and keep food simple.  Avoid dairy foods and sugary items as they can further suppress the immune system.

Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
