Digestive Disorders




Any disease or disorder of the gastrointestinal system comes under digestive disorders. Some of the digestive disorders may affect a particular organ or several parts together. Some of the common symptoms are flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation, regurgitation, acid reflux, difficulty in swallowing, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal pain. Digestive disorders are a common problem and can affect anyone at any stage of their life.


The digestive system starts at the mouth and ends at the anus. It also includes the muscular tube through which food passes (esophagus), stomach, small and large intestine. The liver, gall bladder and pancreas are a part of the system as they secrete juices which are essential for digestion.



The primary causes for digestive disorders are:

- Dehydration – Nearly 75% of our body is made up of water. Therefore sufficient water is essential for good digestion. Dehydration can cause constipation and other imbalances in the body.

- Improper nutrition and an imbalance in the food types or diet is a major contributor to digestive disorders.


- Our intestines contain bacteria which aid our digestion. These bacteria are an essential component in the digestive system and are known as probiotics. An imbalance in probiotics can cause digestive disorders.

- Stress plays a major part in the functioning of the digestive system. Undue stress can give rise to digestive disorders.



The common symptoms of digestive disorders can be indigestion, nausea, vomiting, bloating of the stomach, heartburn, loss of appetite, wind, constipation, diarrhoea and pain in the abdomen.



A doctor can make a diagnosis by taking a medical history of the patient and by requesting for tests to be taken to determine the cause.



It is advised that the nutrition is looked at if this is the cause of a digestive disorder. A Nutritionist can assist in making recommendations to alter the diet to improve or eradicate the condition. Relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga may help the condition if it has been exacerbated by stress. In Aromatherapy, use of certain kinds of oils may help to relieve the symptoms of digestive disorders.
