Ear Ache

Ear ache or Otalgia is referred to as any pain, discomfort that originates within the inner and middle ear. It may not only be due to a disease but is a symptom of any other infection in the related area such as impacted teeth, sinusitis, inflammation in the tonsils, enlarged adenoids and infected pharynx and nasal blockages.

Some causes for an ear ache can be exposure to loud sounds, minor injuries to the ear canal, common cold, pressure differences and ENT (ear nose throat) problems.  Other causes can include ear infections, ear trauma, tooth infection, arthritis of the jaw, Eustachian tube (the tubes leading from throat to the middle ear) disorders and ear or oral tumors. Other risk factors that could lead to the development of ear ache include allergies, family history of ear problems and an atypical anatomy of the head and neck area.

A person having an ear ache can experience pain and may also suffer hearing loss. Ringing or buzzing sounds in the ears, a feeling of ears being blocked and swelling of the ear could also be a common phenomenon. On rare occasions, there may be a discharge from the ear and the person may have the symptoms of lethargy, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and sleeplessness.

The doctor will do a complete medical examination of the patient and note down the patient history. The doctor will evaluate the condition of the patient based on the signs and the symptoms. Hearing tests or laboratory tests may be recommended if the ear ache is a recurring problem in the patient.

Various alternative and complementary therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
