Arthritis is a combined term used to describe inflammation and joint pain disorders. The cartilage surrounding the lubricating fluid around each joint ensures smooth motion. It is known as Arthritis when the cartilage gets narrow damaged or inflammation sets in, and there is intense pain, swelling, tenderness around the joint making movements painful.

Several factors play a role in an individual developing this common problem. Genetics is one of the many reasons for arthritis. Age is another factor which can cause it. The weight of a person can be a cause as the load on the joint bearing the weight can lead to arthritis. Previous injuries, certain jobs like heavy construction work or assembly line work, demanding sports, illness or infection and abnormal metabolism can also be causes of arthritis. People who suffer with many different medical conditions, such as gout, may also develop arthritis. For some, altered biochemistry, hormonal imbalances, shock or stress, physical exertion and other environmental factors may be other causative reasons.

The symptoms may include any or all of the following – pain in the joints, limited function in the joints, inflammation of the muscles, ligaments and cartilage, stiffness, swelling and tenderness of the joint. Various organs of the body may be affected due to arthritis. There is a possibility of a person developing deformed hands and feet. In some cases there may be fever, anaemia, ulcerative colitis, glandular swelling, fatigue and a feeling of ill health. Windy, chilly or damp weather can contribute in aggravating the symptoms. There is a possibility of developing other symptoms connected to the arthritis, such as digestion problems, constipation, loss of appetite and weight loss.

A thorough medical history of the patient is taken by the doctor. Certain tests and imaging studies may also be ordered to evaluate the condition of the patient. The diagnosis will depend upon the type of symptoms, the extent of the spread of the inflammation and the results of the laboratory tests.

The treatment of arthritis is customised for each individual depending upon their condition, location, severity and the frequency of the problem. Options include prescription medicines, joint injections and surgery as recommended by the doctor. Use of mechanical support devices may also be suggested.

Pilates may alleviate the symptoms of arthritis and improve a person’s flexibility and strength. Deep tissue massage may also be recommended as it could bring relief and ease the tension in the deep layered muscles and tissues. Yoga may also prove beneficial and show a positive change in the person’s condition. Various complementary and alternative therapies can help improve the symptoms and treat the condition. Advice should be sought from a qualified practitioner for treatment options.
